Stairs are read as movement between levels of yourself. Going up stands for growth and aspiration, going down for a return to something earlier or deeper. Stairs that crumble or have missing steps are a common anxious version, read as fear that progress has no solid footing. Endless stairs that never arrive anywhere point to effort without visible reward. Falling down the stairs is traditionally taken as a sudden loss of confidence rather than anything physical. A spiral staircase is read as coming back to the same theme at a higher level.
