Drowning is traditionally read as being overwhelmed — by emotion, duty or a situation that leaves no room to breathe. It is one of the most frightening common dreams, and dream books are clear that it is not read as a warning about the body or about water. Struggling at the surface is taken as fighting hard to keep up; sinking calmly, oddly, is often read as giving in to a feeling and finding it survivable. Being pulled out by someone points to help that is there even if you have not asked for it yet, while watching another person drown is read as worry for them, or for a part of yourself you see in them. The dream tends to ask what in your life feels like too much at once.
Does the traditional reading fit your dream, or did it mean something else to you?
My Cosmic Code has a private dream journal. Write a dream down and the app picks out the symbols in it, shows what dream books say about them and, over time, which words recur across your entries. The journal is stored on your device only.
